Ben R. Giambrone Sports Luncheon

On November 16, 2016 an audience of over 500 attended the Ben R. Giambrone/Compeer Rochester Sports Luncheon to hear Hall of Fame Baseball legend Dave Winfield discuss his unique career in the Major Leagues.  Mr. Winfield spoke at length about mental illness and how what we do here is Rochester in our mentoring programs presents a tremendous opportunity to have a positive impact on those in need.

He spoke about how athletes cope with stress and that he was no exception and how important it is for everyone to be educated about mental health.  Another highlight was hearing him discuss how he mentored Derek Jeter.  Mr. Winfield tied it back to Compeer saying how important mentoring is and how you never know what potential lies within the person for whom you are volunteering your time.

About the Ben R. Giambrone Sports Luncheon

Each fall, Compeer Rochester convenes the community downtown for its Ben R. Giambrone Sports Luncheon. Upwards of 700 attendees from Rochester’s most prominent corporations join us to learn about and celebrate Compeer Rochester, and to hear from a premier personality from the world of sports. Past keynote speakers have included Jim Kelly, Reggie Jackson, Joe Montana, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Terry Bradshaw, and Bill Walton.

This event is named in honor of Ben R. Giambrone, a titan for Compeer Rochester over many years, and civic exemplar who was actively involved with community organizations including Mary Cariola Children’s Center, Geva Theatre, Rochester Rotary Club, and Rochester Press-Radio Club. Ben served as Board Chair from 2002-2004 and as President and CEO from 2004-2006.  Under his leadership as co-chair of our annual Sports Luncheon, the event continually set new fund-raising records for Compeer Rochester’s programs.  But most important to Ben among his Compeer involvements was his Youth Program match, Josh.

We were thrilled to host Dave Winfield at our 27th annual Sports Luncheon this year! To view more photos from this year’s event, please visit our Facebook Page.
