Compeer Rochester – Success Stories
Here, in their own words, are some stories from people who have benefited from a Compeer match or who have enriched their own lives by being a Compeer mentor.

A Client’s Story … Christine
My name is Christine, and I have a Compeer match. Compeer has enriched my life be helping me believe in people again. My Compeer match’s name is Ruth. At first, I did not want to trust her but now we do fun things together, and I share different things with Ruth.
With Compeer, I have been to different places like Genesee Country Village Museum, riding on the Sam Patch on the canal, bowling and picnics. At one event, Ruth and I met another Compeer match. Terry and Barb enjoy getting together and doing things with us. I enjoy the events with Compeer as a group, or the four of us or just Ruth. At times, my boxer, Gideon, joins us on a walk or at a picnic with Ruth and me. Every winter, Ruth spends time away from New York state, but we keep in touch with each other to not miss anything. I have postcards from the different places she has been.
In closing, I would like to invite others to join Compeer to be a friend to someone in need and to enrich their lives as mine has been. Even if you leave for the winter, Ruth and I do it and so can you.
A Volunteer’s Perspective … Tim
Nelson and I have been matched for 13 years. Nelson calls me when any big event happens in his life. I am the first person he has told when he finds a job, gets a puppy or is having a difficult time. We laugh together and have become very close.
We enjoy going to Webster Park to take a walk and share each other’s company. Sometime we will buy a sandwich or a pizza, and eat and talk by the lake. We talk to each other about our families and about the events that happened since we last saw each other. The most fun we have is when we attend Compeer events and we are able to talk to other people. We usually dress up for the Halloween party. Nelson will talk for weeks before the party about what costume he is planning to wear.
We recently started a scrapbook to gather our pictures, ticket stubs from events and other memories we have shared over the years. I truly cherish the memories Nelson and I have shared over the years, and I look forward to future memories.
